First Time Coming to Richardson, Texas – Did You Know?


Kentucky and Tennessee settlers came to the Richardson area in the 1840s, and until the 1850s the settlement was centered at the present-day site of Richland College. Following the Civil War, the towns center was shifted to the northwest to be closer to a railroad that was built. Chartered in 1873, the town was named after railroad contractor E.H. Richardson. Texas Instruments established its offices in Dallas on the south border of Richardson in 1956, causing significant gains in land values, economic status, and population. This was also boosted by the creation of the University of Texas at Dallas within the city limits.


Richardson is in Dallas and Collin counties in Texas, and as of the 2010 census, the city had a total population of 99,223. It is an affluent inner suburb of Dallas as well as being home of The University of Texas at Dallas, it is also the home to the Telecom Corridor that has a high concentration of telecommunications companies there. In Richardson’s 28 square miles more than 5,000 businesses operate, including AT&T, Ericsson, Verizon, Cisco Systems, Samsung, MetroPCS, Texas Instruments, TriQuint Semiconductor, and Fujitsu. Richardson was ranked as the 15th best place to live in the United States in 2006 by Money magazine, and it ranked 3rd best place to live in Texas.


Dallas and Plano border most of Richardson and according to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 28.6 square miles with 28.6 square miles of land and 0.08 square miles of water. About two-thirds of the city is in Dallas County and the third of the city to the north in Collin County. In 2000, there were 91,802 people, 35,191 households, and 24,774 families living in Richardson. The population density is 3,213.9 people per square mile and there are 36,530 housing units at a density of 1,278.9 per square mile. Median income for a family in Richardson is about $90,790 and the median home price is $195,510.


Although quality of life is declining in other parts of the country, from 2005 through 2009 Richardson had substantial economic increases. Total assessed property value for the city went up from $8.3 billion in 2005 to $9.5 billion 2008, and sales tax collection leapt from $21 million in 2005 to about $24.7 million in 2008. Corporate recruitment and retention is also high in the city, with some important corporate expansions or relocations there including Bank of America Financial Services, MetroPCS, Yahoo, Fujitsu Transaction Solutions, and Halff Associates.
