First Time Coming to Mesquite, Texas – Did You Know?


Mesquite was founded in 1878 by the Texas & Pacific railway line outside of Dallas. In the late 19th century and early 20th century, the city enlarged as a farming community that grew cotton, hay, corn and sugar, using the railroad to ship these raw goods. After World War II, the suburban boom also took place in Mesquite which was formerly a primarily agrarian area. The city’s population grew from 1,696 in the 1950s to 27,526 in 1960 and then 55,131 in 1970.


Mesquite is in the Dallas/Ft.Worth area of Texas with much of the city located in Dallas County with parts the east overlapping into Kaufman County. The population was 139,824 in 2010, making it the eighteenth most populous city in the state of Texas. Mesquite pass a law in 2011 that allowed beer and wine sales in the city. It had been considered for many years, but always got blocked by strong protest against it. Before the law it was one of the few cities without beer and wine sales in eastern Dallas County


The United States Census Bureau records the city’s total area at 46.2 square miles, with 46.0 square miles of land and 0.15 square miles of water. July is the warmest month on average, with highest recorded temperature at 112°F in 1980. January is the coolest month, with lowest recorded temperature at 1°F in 1989. May is the wettest month, and Mesquite is part of the humid subtropical region. Mesquite has five high schools: Mesquite High School, North Mesquite High School, West Mesquite High School, Poteet High School, and Horn High School, as well as numerous elementary and middle schools. Private school Dallas Christian School is located in Mesquite.


The city has a couple of notable towers, where Mesquite Tower is a lattice tower of unusual design, and Town East Tower is the tallest building in Mesquite, at seven stories high. Some notable people from the city are Alyssa Edwards, contestant on season 5 of RuPaul’s Drag Race; Dave Abruzzese, ex-drummer for Pearl Jam; Melissa Archer, actress on One Life to Live; Joe Bowden, former professional football player for the Houston Oilers, Tennessee Titans, and Dallas Cowboys; John D. Carmack, game programmer and the co-founder of id Software; Ray Cunningham, former professional baseball player for the St. Louis Cardinals; and Terry Fator, singer and ventriloquist, winner of America’s Got Talent in 2007.
