First Time Coming to McKinney, Texas – Did You Know?

In1849, William Davis was the owner of 3,000 acres where McKinney now stands, and he donated 120 acres for the town site. McKinney incorporated ten years later, and the town adopted the commission form of government in 1913. For 125 years, McKinney was the principal commercial center for the county, providing farmers with flour, corn, and cotton mills, cotton gins, a cotton compress and cottonseed oil mill. It also had banks, churches, schools, newspapers, and an opera house. McKinney had a population of more than 10,000 and 355 businesses by 1953. But McKinney was surpassed in size by Plano by 1970.

McKinney is the county seat of Collin County, Texas, and second in population to Plano.
