First Time Coming to Garland, Texas – Did You Know?


The Peters colony area received immigrants from 1850, but the community was created in 1874. The city that became Garland was incorporated in 1891, and by 1904 the population was 819 people. Garland Power & Light has been the municipal electric provider since 1920 and still powers the city today. In 1927, a very destructive F4 tornado hit the town and killed fifteen people, including former mayor, S. E. Nicholson. In the late 1930s businesses started to move back into the area. 1950 to 1954 was a time that the Dallas/Garland area suffered from a very bad and extended drought, causing the city to supplement the water provided by wells by using the water from the nearby Lake Lavon.


Garland is a large city northeast of Dallas in the Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex, located almost entirely within Dallas County. It had a population of 226,876 in 2010, making it the eighty-seventh most populated city in the country and twelfth most populous city in Texas. Garland was ranked #67 on CNN and Money magazine’s 2008 list of the “Top 100 Places to Live”. Garland created several developments in the 2000s, towards the northern part of the city. Hawaiian Falls waterpark was unveiled in 2003 and the Garland Independent School District’s Special Events Center opened in 2005. It is an arena and conference facility.


Garland’s total area is 57.1 square miles, all land, and it is part of the humid subtropical region. July is the average warmest month with a record high temperature of 111 °F in 2000. The coolest month is January, with maximum precipitation occurring in May. The census in 2010 recorded 226,876 people, 75,696 households, and 56,272 families living there, with population density of 3,973.3 people per square mile. The median income for a household in the city was $52,441, and $57,293 for a family.


Kraft Foods bought the Continental Motors Plant after the war to retool for its manufacturing plant and the Kraft Foods plant is still operating today. As a station on two railroads, Garland was a major onion-shipping point in the 1940s. Garland had one of the lowest poverty rates of any city in the country in the 1980s. The Patty Granville Arts Center complex is operated and owned by the city, with two fine proscenium theatres seating 720 and 200 people. There is also the Plaza Theatre seating 350. The Atrium is a 6,500-square-foot ballroom encased in glass on two sides that opens to an outdoor courtyard at the Granville Arts Center. Civic, community and commercial organizations can have banquets, receptions, trade shows, and conventions there.
