First Time Coming to Fort Worth, Texas – Did You Know?

YESTERDAY

In 1846, Major General William Jenkins Worth served second under General Zachary Taylor in the beginning of the Mexican–American War and in 1849 was placed in command of the Department of Texas. That year he suggested a line of ten forts that would mark the western Texas frontier from Eagle Pass to the connection of the West Fork and Clear Fork of the Trinity River, and a month later Worth passed away from cholera. The next man set to command the area was Major Ripley A. Arnold, who established a camp on the Trinity River and called the post Camp Worth to honor the late General Worth. Fort Worth changed from a quiet outpost to a busy town after it became a stop on the legendary Chisholm Trail, a path used to drive millions of head of cattle to market to the north.

TODAY

As the 16th-largest city in the United States and fifth-largest city in Texas, Fort Worth is cultural pathway into the American West, covering almost 350 square miles in Tarrant, Denton, Johnson, Parker, and Wise counties. It is the county seat of Tarrant County, and had a population of 741,206 in 2010. It is the Dallas–Fort Worth–Arlington metropolitan area’s second largest city. Started as an army outpost in 1849, Fort Worth still holds its Western heritage and traditional design and architecture. The USS Fort Worth was the first United States Navy ship named after the city.

PRIME LOCATION

Fort Worth is part of the Grand Prairie eco-region, and serves as a boundary between the largely forested eastern parts and the semi-arid central part of what is called the Cross Timbers region of Texas. In 1913, a large storage dam was built 7 miles from the city on the West Fork of the Trinity River, and the lake formed by this dam is known as Lake Worth. That project cost nearly $1,500,000 – a huge sum at the time. March 28, 2000, an F3-F4 tornado crashed through downtown and turned buildings to shreds and scrap metal. It was the first serious tornado to hit Fort Worth since the 1940s.

QUALITY OF LIFE

Art Deco-style buildings are predominant downtown and the Tarrant County Courthouse was designed in the American Beaux Arts style, modeled after the Texas State Capitol building. Sundance Square structures have preserved their historical early 20th-century façades. Fort Worth has over 1000 natural gas wells tapping into the Barnett Shale, each site is a bare patch of gravel of 2–5 acres, most secured by chain link fencing. Calling itself the “City of Cowboys and Culture, Fort Worth has the world’s largest indoor rodeo. The Fort Worth Zoo has 5000 or more animals and Family Life magazine calls it a top zoo in the nation. The city also has the Fort Worth Botanic Garden and the Botanical Research Institute of Texas.
