First Time Coming to Arlington, Texas – Did You Know?


Following the 1841 battle between Texas General Edward H. Tarrant and Native Americans of the Village Creek settlement, there was a trading post set up at Marrow Bone Spring in current Arlington. The area had rich soil that appealed to farmers so many agriculture-related businesses were created by the end of the nineteenth century. In 1876, Arlington was built next to the Texas and Pacific Railway, named for General Robert E. Lee’s Arlington House that is in Arlington County, Virginia. Arlington became a cotton-ginning and farming center, incorporating in 1884, and by 1925 the population was about 3,031.


Arlington is a city in the Dallas–Fort Worth–Arlington metropolitan area and Tarrant County with a population of almost 374,000 by the end of 2011. The city is the third largest municipality in the metropolitan area, the fiftieth most populated city in the United States, and seventh most populous city in Texas. It is home to the University of Texas at Arlington and is found about 12 miles east of downtown Fort Worth and 20 miles to the west of downtown Dallas. Arlington has a General Motors assembly plant and hosts the Texas Rangers Ballpark, the AT&T Stadium, the headquarters for American Mensa, the International Bowling, and the original Six Flags.


The city is the fiftieth largest city in the United States with 365,438 people in 2010. There are 133,072 households, and 90,099 families living in the city, with a population density of 3,811 people per square mile. The census reports 144,805 housing units at a density average of 1,510 per square mile. It is racially 65% White, 20% Black or African American, 1% Native American, 9% Asian, less than 1% Pacific Islander, 5% other races, 2% mixed race and 30% Hispanic or Latino. Average household income is around $50,655, and 43% of Arlington renters and 28% of homeowners pay about 35% or more of their household income for housing expense.


The Dallas Cowboys football team relocated to Arlington from Texas Stadium in Irving recently. This new AT&T Stadium is walking distance from the Rangers Ballpark. There is visitor information called the Experience Arlington Visitors Information Center right next to Rangers Ballpark adjacent to AT&T Stadium where people can get discounts, an Arlington Visitors Guide, maps and more. Vinnie Paul Abbott and Darrell Abbott are two brothers that are the most notable musicians from Arlington who formed the metal group Pantera. Darrell died in 2004, and since then friends, family, and community put on the Ride For Dime event yearly on August 20, his birthday.
