First Time Coming to Waxahachie, Texas – Did You Know?

YESTERDAY

Waxahachie was a donated tract of land from early settler Emory W. Rogers, an Alabaman who came to Texas in 1839, and became the county seat of the newly established Ellis county in 1850. The first is pronounced “woks,” not “waks”, like the Waxahatchee Creek in Alabama, and it is not the name of an Indian tribe. Some think the name means “cow” or “buffalo” from an unknown Native American language. It might be from the Native American Alabama language, first used in the area of Alabama around Waxahatchee Creek by the Alabama-Coushatta people.

TODAY

Waxahachie is a southern suburb of Dallas with a 2010 population of 29,621. The oldest cowboy in the history of the American West, Tom Blasingame, may have been born in Waxahachie. Bill Ham, manager for ZZ Top; Rhythm and Blues singer Tevin Campbell; Byron Nelson, a professional golf legend; and Academy Award winning director Robert Benton, of the 1984 film “Places in the Heart” called this his hometown. The first female African-American pilot, Bessie Coleman, came to Waxahachie at age two and was raised there. Land around Waxahachie was chosen as the site for the Superconducting Super Collider in 1988, to be the world’s largest and most energetic particle accelerator, but seventeen shafts were sunk before the project was cancelled by Congress in 1993.

PRIME LOCATION

The 1983 film about a country western singer, Tender Mercies, was filmed in Waxahachie. The director, Bruce Beresford, avoided the city’s picturesque parts and Victorian architecture to go for a more rural scene like the West Texas area. Another 1983 film called Places in the Heart with Sally Field was also filmed in Waxahachie, but this film deliberately used the town square and the Victorian and Plantation homes still intact in the area. Awards were accepted for both film’s actors. The Scarborough Renaissance Festival is the town’s popular Renaissance fair theme park, opening annually during the months of April and May since 1981.

QUALITY OF LIFE

Waxahachie is known for the elaborate Richardsonian Romanesque courthouse, one of the most beautiful of Texas’s older courthouses. The city has many structures of Victorian architecture and Gingerbread homes, and some were converted into bed and breakfasts. There is a yearly Gingerbread Trail festival with tours of many of these homes. The television series Walker, Texas Ranger, starring Chuck Norris, was sometimes filmed in Waxahachie. Employment is mostly in industry, at Owens Corning, Georgia-Pacific, AEP, James Hardie, Rock Tenn, and Dart Container.
