First Time Coming to Plano, Texas – Did You Know?

YESTERDAY

In the 1840s first settlers came to the area near present-day Plano, and structures like a sawmill, a gristmill, and a store soon attracted more people to the area. Plano is the Spanish word for “flat”, which references the local terrain. The name was approved by the post office, and in 1872, the Houston and Central Texas Railway completion caused the city to grow, and it was officially incorporated in 1873. A fire scorched through the central business district in 1881, destroying most buildings, but the town rebuilt and business came back through the 1880s. Plano was served only by private schools until that was changed in 1881.
