First Time Coming to Mansfield, Texas – Did You Know?

YESTERDAY

In 1856, R.S. Man and Julian Feild came to the area to build a grist mill at the crossroads of what would become the center of Mansfield, in the oak groves bordering Walnut Creek. Julian Feild purchased 540 acres in the Mansfield area that year, and Man and Feild finished the three-story brick grist mill sometime before 1859. It produced flour and meal, and was the first steam powered mill built in North Texas, receiving patronage as far south as San Antonio and as far north as Oklahoma. The Man and Feild Mill supplied meal and flour during the civil was to the Confederate States Army, and as per common practice, the owners tithed ten percent of the mill’s production to the Confederacy.
