First Time Coming to Lancaster, Texas – Did You Know?

YESTERDAY

Lancaster was one of Dallas County’s first incorporated communities, established in 1842 and incorporating in 1866. It was designed after Lancaster, Kentucky, with a city plan featuring streets entering from the middle of each side of a traffic circle in the center of the town square. Lancaster’s train depot opened in 1888 as a stop on the Dallas and Waco line. It became part of the Missouri–Kansas–Texas Railroad line in 1891, and it ran from Dallas to the Gulf Coast of Texas. In 1934, Clyde Barrow of Bonnie & Clyde fame robbed the R.P. Henry & Sons Bank found close to the southeast corner of the town square, with Bonnie Parker waiting in their getaway car on Malloy Bridge Road.

Lancaster is in Dallas County, Texas, with a population of 36,361 in 2010. It is a suburb of Dallas and part of the Best Southwest area, along with Lancaster, Cedar Hill, Duncanville, and DeSoto. An EF-2 tornado struck the city in 2012, and damaged 300 structures but no deaths were reported. Lancaster was a finalist for the All-America City Award in 2005 and 2006. The National Arbor Day Foundation designated Lancaster a Tree City USA in 2007.

The population was 25,894 in 2000, and 9,182 households and 6,895 families were living in the city. Population density was at 884.0 people per square mile, and there were 9,590 housing units at a density average of 327.4 per square mile. Racially, the city is 37.63% White, 53.00% African American, 0.49% Native American, 0.39% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 6.58% other races, 1.85% mixed, and 11.59% Hispanic or Latino of any race. It has the largest African American-majority of any city in Texas. Income median for a household is $43,773, and $48,498 for a family. Lancaster is a home-rule city with the form of government being council-manager.

QUALITY OF LIFE

Lancaster has a charming Historic Town Square and it is a 15-minute drive to downtown Dallas, where people can go to enjoy the Symphony and other artistic and historic endeavors. For over one hundred years the Visitors Center, previously known as the Interurban building built in 1911, has welcomed visitors and businesses to Lancaster. The Interurban Building was once home to the Texas Interurban Railway that ran until the 1950s. Major construction was recently completed at the airport, as part of a $1.5 million Capital Improvement Project.
