First Time Coming to Flower Mound, Texas – Did You Know?

YESTERDAY

Presbyterians established a camp in the area around Flower Mound in the 1840s, and began holding religious camps there for two to three weeks at a time. Flower Mound Presbyterian Church was formed in 1854 southwest of Lewisville in an area known as “Long Prairie”. The town voted to incorporate in 1961 to avoid annexation by the City of Irving. At that time the second mayor, William Wilkerson, who led the incorporation effort started movement to improve the town’s phone service and water supply. In 1974, the construction of Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport just 4 miles south of the town caused a period of rapid growth and population increase.

TODAY

Flower Mound is in Denton and Tarrant counties and is a suburb of the Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex. It is northwest of Dallas and northeast of Fort Worth next to Grapevine Lake, and the town gets its name from a prominent 12.5-acre mound in the southern part of town. In 2000, its population was 50,702 making it one of the fastest-growing cities in the United States at that time. In 2010, its population was 64,669. Flower Mound’s municipal government chose to invest in a public park system with an extensive network of trails, and the city has used a smart growth system for urban planning.

PRIME LOCATION

Flower Mound is 20 miles northwest of Dallas and 25 miles northeast of Fort Worth, situated on the Trinity River basin in the Eastern Cross Timbers sub-region in Texas covering 43.4 square miles. Grapevine Lake and Marshall Creek comprise most of the town’s southern boundary. The city’s weather is classified as humid subtropical, averaging 233 sunny days per year and 79 rainy days. The town is dedicated to preserving existing open space, vistas, and natural habitats as they implement controlled growth. The 50 feet high mound located close to the intersection of FM 3040 and FM 2499 caught the attention of early settlers and it is typically covered by big bluestem, little bluestem, and Indian grasses.

QUALITY OF LIFE

The city has 693 acres of land with 54 public parks and recreation facilities on it. 2008 marked the grand opening the $13.825 million community activity center that has meeting rooms, day care facilities, weight lifting equipment, a pool, and a competition indoor pool. Hilltop Park was changed to Jake’s Hilltop Park in 2008, in honor of Lance Corporal Jacob Lugo – first military serviceman from Flower Mound to die in the line of duty. A system of recreational bike paths were added over the years around the town due to environmental concerns and automobile traffic congestion, and there are around 14 miles of natural surface trails and 9 miles of equestrian trails mostly around Grapevine Lake.
