First Time Coming to Denton, Texas – Did You Know?

YESTERDAY

Denton County and the town were named after John B. Denton, who was a preacher and lawyer killed in during a skirmish in 1841 with the Kichai people. Pickneyville and Alton were chosen to be the county seat before Denton finally selected in 1857. It incorporated in 1866 and the city grew to become an agricultural trade center for the mill and cottage industries. In 1881 the existence of the Texas and Pacific Railway brought the first rail connection and an influx of people to the area. North Texas Normal College was established in 1890, and is now the University of North Texas, and the Girls’ Industrial College of 1903 is now Texas Woman’s University. These helped Denton’s economy and culture to increase.

TODAY

Denton is the county seat of Denton County and in 2010 had a population of 113,383, making it the 27th most populous city in Texas and the 11th-largest city in the Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex. It is located at the north of that Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex right between Oklahoma and Texas on the Interstate 35. Known for its successful music life, Denton hosts the North Texas State Fair and Rodeo and the Denton Arts and Jazz Festival that attract over 300,000 people there every year. Denton has hot, humid summers and not many extreme weather events.

PRIME LOCATION

Denton, along with Dallas and Fort Worth, are the three cities that form the area known as the “Golden Triangle of North Texas.” The city has a total area of 89.316 square miles, with 87.952 square miles of land and 1.364 square miles of water. It is at the northeast edge of the Bend Arch–Fort Worth Basin, which is an area of flat terrain with elevation ranges from 500 to 900 feet. Some of the city is atop the Barnett Shale, which is a geological formation thought to contain large quantities of natural gas. Located 15 miles south of the city, is Lewisville Lake, a man-made reservoir. Denton lies on the southern end of “Tornado Alley”, and the National Weather Service sometimes issues tornado watches.

QUALITY OF LIFE

Denton is where the annual North Texas State Fair and Rodeo began in 1928. It promotes the cowboy culture of Texas and features local country-rock performances, pageants, and food contests, bringing in over 150,000 people for its nine-day run. Since 1998, the Denton Municipal Airport has the annual Denton Airshow, with aerial demonstrations and airplane exhibits. Other events are an annual Redbud Festival, the Fiesta on the Square, and the Thin Line Documentary Film Fest. Denton’s college town atmosphere supports the city’s live music venues. Denton’s music scene received feature attention in 2007 and 2008 from The Guardian, Pop Matters, and The New York Times, with Paste Magazine naming Denton’s music scene the best in the United States in 2008.
